In my article “How to Save a Trader’s Life,“ I talked about a trader being “lost in the bitterness.” Then I briefly explained how transformation of the bitterness is possible.
Bitterness or Wisdom
In alchemy, salt symbolizes bitterness or wisdom. Carl Jung writes:
“Tears, sorrow, and disappointment are bitter, but wisdom is the comforter in all psychic suffering. Indeed, bitterness and wisdom form a pair of alternatives: where there is bitterness, wisdom is lacking; and where wisdom is, there can be no bitterness” (Mysterium Coniunctionus, Collected Works. Par. 330).
Encounter with the Self
Where can this wisdom that Jung talked about be found? Wisdom can be found through an encounter with the Self. For example, a trader made bitter by years of repeated losses, after trying various trading systems and methods to no avail, hits bottom. This trader who is “lost in the bitterness” sees no way out.
Job was lost in his bitter wilderness experience before God revealed himself to Job. And just as Job was transformed by his direct encounter with the living God, the trader can be transformed by a direct encounter with the Self.
