“Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness. Therefore, be careful lest the light in you be darkness” (Lk.11:34-35, RSV).
Eyes and seeing can be symbolic of gaining consciousness. In particular, an experience with the Eye of God can purge the darkness from the ego. The following are excerpts from The Creation of Consciousness: Jung’s Myth for Modern Man by Edward F. Edinger: “Sometimes during a major life crisis the explicit image of the Eye of God will appear in dreams (p.47). . . . Being seen by the Eye of God, can be a fearful experience . . . (p.44). If the archetypal image of the Eye of God has been activated it means that one is going through an ordeal analogous to that of Job . . . . In psychological terms the Eye will be destructive of all in the ego that is not appropriately related to the Self” (p.51).
“Therefore, be careful lest the light in you be darkness.” What has this warning to do with traders, other than trading can seem like enduring the trials of Job? The ego’s goals in trading need to be related to the will of the Self (the will of God). This means that if the ego’s main goal is to just make money without being transformed by the trading process, it ain’t gonna happen. It isn’t going to happen if trading is your vocation. Being called by God into a line of work implies being transformed through that work. Let “your whole body [be] full of light.”
