“And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. . . . Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues” (Matthew 10:14, 16-17).
Ears to Hear
Traders who trade from God’s principles are few indeed. If you share your spiritual trading style with “wolves,” don’t be surprised if you’re verbally mauled. In life as well as in trading, only share your spirituality with those with ears to hear. “But beware of men . . . they will scourge you in their [trading temples].”
In order to become whole as a person and complete as a trader, you need to know the down and dirty tricks and ways of the trading world . . . if only to avoid becoming prey. Jesus urges you to be wise as serpents yet as harmless as doves.
“They will be wise as serpents because, like the serpent, they will be familiar with the things of the earth. Yet they will be as innocent as doves because they will be conscious of their own motives and their own earth-nature, and in this way will remain innocent. Such wholeness will be extremely paradoxical” (The Kingdom Within: The Inner Meaning of Jesus’ Sayings by John A. Sanford, p.95).
Learn the ways of the world without adhering to its collective values. Live joyously. Trade soulfully. “Shake off the dust” and move into the light.
