The second Zen Ox-herding picture or the second stage on the road to enlightenment in Zen Buddhism is called “Finding the Tracks.” Hixon writes:
“Through the Sutras and teachings he discerns the tracks of the Ox. He has been informed that, just as differently shaped golden vessels are all basically the same gold, so each and every thing is a manifestation of the Self. He has not actually entered the gate, but he sees in a tentative way the tracks of the Ox” (Coming Home: The Experience of Enlightenment in Sacred Traditions by Lex Hixon).
The Desert of the Real
Aboard the Nebuchadnezzar after Neo is unplugged from the Matrix, Morpheus says, “Welcome to the real world.” Neo replies, “Am I dead?” Later, while in a computer construct, Morpheus shows Neo a vision of the real world. Morpheus says, “You’ve been living in a dream world, Neo. This is the world as it exists today…. Welcome to the Desert of the Real.” Initially, the real world is shown in black and gray with a little white. It lacks color. The Second Noble Truth of Buddhism states that people are attached to their desires. The Matrix with all its colorful images (illusions and desires) keeps people ignorant of their suffering (The First Noble Truth). When Morpheus finishes showing Neo the truth of the real world, Neo yells, “Stop! Let me out! Let me out. I want out!”
In the movie The Road, the scenes are depicted in black and gray showing a post-apocalyptic world, a world symbolically devoid of illusions and artificial desires. Walking the road is inherent to staying alive. And walking the spiritual road (in Buddhism, The Eightfold Path, The Fourth Noble Truth) helps people let go of their attachment to desires (The Third Noble Truth).
The Desire to Win
In trading, the desire to win can be all-encompassing. Piercing the balloon-like inflated ego, the Self creates a series of losses. These losses are the tracks to the trader’s soul. These losses are the soul’s Sutras. The false goal would be to detach yourself from the desire to win in order to win through nonattachment. The true goal is to discover what the Self is trying to teach you through your trading.
