In the song “How to Save a Life” by The Fray, the lyrics of the chorus are the following:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life
If the song is viewed symbolically as a trader’s song, then the friend you lost was a part of your personality that had an excitement and enthusiasm for trading. Continual losses and hardship cause you to be lost “in the bitterness.” And if you successfully go through the dark night of the soul (the alchemical nigredo), you can redeem yourself and paradoxically save your own life. Then you will have a renewed energy for trading should trading be your vocation.
