The Taoist Trader: The Market Flirts with You

Tao Te Ching (Chapter 47)

Without going outside

one can know the whole world

Without looking out the window

one can see the ways of Heaven

The farther one goes

the less one knows

Thus the Sage does not go, yet he knows

He does not look, yet he sees

He does not do, yet all is done

(By Lao Tsu, translated by Jonathan Star)

Let your mind mirror the trading screen. The purer the reflection, the more effortlessly your mind will catch the beginning of the next market move . . . before it occurs. “He does not look, yet he sees.” While in a meditative state of mind, you are like a microcosm reflecting the outer world. “Without going outside one can know the whole world. Without looking out the window one can see the ways of Heaven.” Flowing with the Tao requires that you let go of the monkey mind and embrace the mirror mind.

The Market Flirts with You

According to Amy Mindell, “The Essence level is the realm of subtle tendencies that occur before they can be verbalized such as a tendency to move before moving . . . . Flirts are the first way in which the essence world arises. The essence world appears as quick, flickering nonverbal sensations, visual flirts, moods, and hunches” (“Amy on the Evolution of Process Theory” by Amy Mindell). The market flirts with you. And in the realm of the Tao time flows differently. That’s why it is possible to pick up market flirts before the manifestation of the next market move.

Somewhere in Time

If you’re interested in an explanation of this phenomenon from the realm of physics, read Arnold Mindell’s Quantum Mind: The Edge between Physics and Psychology, especially subchapters “Waves Forward and Backward in Time” and “Flirts in Dreamtime” from Chapter 17: “Quantum Flirts.” If you still your mind and pay attention to flirts, you are acting without action. “He does not do, yet all is done.”
